Consumer spending is on the rise! Even when we think the economy is in the gutter and more people are out of jobs than ever before, we keep seeing more spending year after year when it comes to holiday and online shopping.
Halloween is not only one of the most fun and exciting holidays of the year, it’s also the first event to kick off the big fourth quarter consumer spending. Everyone loves to spend money on throwing amazing Halloween parties, looking their best in crazy costumes and also spending money on candy for the kids.
So the big question is, how can you make some money off Halloween in the process?
Truth be told, I love writing about and analyzing Halloween data and year after year I come out with new posts on what to keep an eye and what’s working best (resources later in the article), but with my hands tied on other projects, I simply never find the time to create Halloween resource sites to cash in on every year. However, this doesn’t mean there is a whole world of opportunity waiting for you next year at the this same time!
To get you inspired, let’s take a look at some of the latest consumer spending during Halloween from the infographic below.
Consumer Spending During Halloween
We all know a lot of money is being spent on Halloween, but when you step back and look at how itemized it is — there is a lot of potential.
For example, $ 6.9 billion will be spent across the board on costumes, house decorations, candy and much more. This also equates to roughly $ 74 per person.
The biggest spending is going to come in the form of Halloween costumes.
- Adult costumes = $ 1.9 billion
- Childrens costumes = $ 950 million
- Pet costumes = $ 350 million
One of the best ways to make money with Halloween, is to create your own Halloween website or blog. The goal here would be to create a niche focus site on a specific set of costumes (ie: pet superhero costumes), then redirect your audience to any of the major online costume sites by linking up with any of the top Halloween affiliate programs.
You would want to go extremely niche with this because it would eliminate a lot of your search competition with huge budgets. You could also target relevant audiences through Facebook ads and social media hashtags as well.
When looking at your potential customer based, it’s reported that over 68 million Americans will be dressing up for Halloween this year. But guess what… Millenials are now performing most of their costume research and buying online, versus heading to those local costume shops and Spirit Halloween locations you are seeing all over the place.
- 49% will use the internet to find costume ideas
- 34% will head to a retail store or local shop
- 24% will base their costume off pop cultural news and trends
What this means for you is that you can build out niche sites and target low competition Halloween search terms to once again target to your audience.
You might also be thinking… “it’s a lot of work to create an authority site for just one month of real business”. To which I answer… “Yes, this isn’t supposed to be easy, but it’s not just a one-time site.”.
Halloween happens year after year and the amount of spending that happens during the month of October is enough to keep many Halloween focused brands successful year after year. There are also always audiences and customers for princess parties, birthdays, random parties, bachelorette parties and much more — just look at sites like Party City and BuyCostumes.com throughout the year and see what they are selling.
Create something awesome that provides value and targets your exact audiences and you can definitely make money with Halloween. Start small and don’t go after super competitive keywords. People are buying costumes, decorations and everything else in between for Halloween — get your sites and ads in front of this audience and they will buy from you!
